Former CEO of Universities Australia Professor Glenn Withers AO has returned to ANU as a professor of economics in the Crawford School of Public Policy.
Professor Withers, previously a professor of public policy in the ANU Crawford School of Public Policy (formerly the Crawford School of Economics and Government), has recently completed a four-year term as foundation CEO of Universities Australia.
Dean of the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific Professor Andrew MacIntyre said that Professor Withers was a tremendous asset to the university sector in general and to ANU in particular.
“Over his distinguished career, Professor Withers has been an adviser to governments in Australia and internationally, the Business Council of Australia and the World Bank,” said Professor MacIntyre. “He has lectured at the universities of Cambridge and Harvard and was made an Officer in the Order of Australia for his part in developing the Australian immigration points system.
“More recently Professor Withers has been working closely with me on a submission to the Australia in the Asian Century task force which is led by newly appointed Executive Director of the ANU Institute of Public Policy Dr Ken Henry.
“I’m delighted that Professor Withers has returned to ANU; his insight, experience and thinking will further enrich the important work being done here.”
Professor Withers has also been appointed one of only 25 Fellows of the Association for Tertiary Education Management, and Chair of the Committee for Economic Development of Australia’s newly formed Council on Economic Policy – an independent forum for economic ideas and policy evaluation.
In his new role at ANU, Professor Withers is working on an Australian Research Council grant on student funding issues and is also convening an Academy of Social Sciences of Australia workshop on the ‘Idea of the University’, drawing on insights gained during his time at Universities Australia.
