Kubiszewski has been invited to be part of a team of negotiators representing the Caribbean country at the Conference of the Parties (COP19) meeting organised as part of the United Nations Framework on Climate Change. The event will be held in November in Warsaw, Poland.
The researcher was chosen to be part of the team because of her work in the field of ecological economics, especially on ecosystem services and carbon sequestration. While there, she will be expected to attend many of the meetings that happen around the clock at COP19, and put the case for the Dominican Republic’s stance on many climate change-related questions.
Kubiszewski, who edits the Crawford-based journal Solutions, says she’s excited about the prospect of representing the country and keen to highlight the challenges it faces in confronting climate issues.
“The Dominican Republic, like so many developing nations, stands to lose a lot through the threats posed by climate change. However, because they are a small island nation, they face significant problems in tackling these issues alone,” she said.
“I’m looking forward to doing what I can to help address these challenges and to work cooperatively with the other delegates to try and find solutions. I hope that I will do the Dominican Republic (and the Crawford School) proud.”
